Some Care for Your Summer Hair

✍️ By Stephanie McCoy, Contributing Writer

The summer is almost here ☀️ and with it comes some of the usual hair problems that help take away from the glamour of that gorgeous body that you have been working so hard to get 💪🏽💁🏽‍♀️. Well, we know the problems and we have the solutions, from professional hair stylists to doctors to nutritionists.

1️ Summer Hair Problem: Dryness
The sun brightens things up 🌞… and it also dries things out rather quickly: Like hair. Combat dryness with a nourishing shampoo, conditioner, and hair treatments, like amino acid shampoo and conditioner 💧. They infuse your hair with moisture to help keep it manageable and soft ✨. Work it up into a creamy lather and it will strengthen your hair, as well as help keep your strands looking healthy and silky smooth 💆🏽‍♀️.

Dry hair usually is accompanied with a dry scalp 🧖🏽‍♀️. Strengthen your scalp’s skin barrier and restore its moisture level by providing gentle exfoliation and dissolving dead skin cells, impurities, product buildup, and pollution 🚿. You can also use a scalp detoxifying treatment scrub. Be sure to use one that is safe to use on all scalp types (and on color-treated hair), including sensitive ones 🌿. Use it once a week in place of your shampoo. You’ll be left feeling squeaky-clean and refreshed, with long-lasting scalp balance, and stronger, fuller-looking hair 💫.

2️ Summer Hair Problem: Greasy Scalp Issues
While you do want to keep dry hair moisturized in the summer, you don’t want it to fly over to the other end of the spectrum: greasy hair 😓. Sebum, your skin’s natural moisturizer, increases in production in the summer months 🧴. This can lead to greasy-looking hair. If you’re familiar with this summertime woe, you may be tempted to wash your hair more frequently. ❌ DO NOT DO THAT. Over-washing the skin on your scalp can actually increase sebum production even more, as your scalp can dry out, which prompts it to overproduce sebum to compensate. Try using a dry shampoo in between washes; it will absorb excess oil to help keep greasiness in check ✅.

3️ Sun-Triggered Hair-Color Fading
Here, it’s all about prevention—you’ve got to keep your tresses safe from those rays 🛡️☀️. So when you’re out and about, make sure to use a styling product with a UV filter like L’Oréal Elnett Satin Extra-Strong UV Hairspray —or, even better, get a sun hat 🧢. It’ll not only protect your hair but also look cute. Other common summer hair concerns are sun-bleached hair and diminished vibrancy on color-treated strands 🎨. Help protect your locks from the sun’s color-leaching rays with products specifically designed to help you win this battle, like Sunflower Color Preserving Shampoo and Conditioner 🌻. They leverage the power of sunflower and apricot kernel oils; the former offers antioxidant properties, while the latter is a humectant. The duo also contains a blend of vitamins B3, B5, and B6 💊. The complementary formulas gently cleanse and condition your hair while helping to restore your color. Even better, they contain a UV-protective filter to help defend your beloved hue from the sun’s damaging rays. Use them each time you wash your hair for vibrant, smooth, healthy-looking hair 💁🏾‍♀️.

4️ Summer Hair Problem: the Dreaded Chlorine-Green Tint
The pool is the place to be at in the summer 🏊🏼‍♀️. Being in the pool however, comes with some problems. Any light-haired female will quickly attest that chlorine can give blond hair a minty hue 💚. If your hair starts to turn on you, look for a chlorine-removing shampoo like Aubrey Organics Swimmers’ Normalizing Shampoo, or make like Sienna Miller, who has reportedly turned to tomato juice 🍅 to eliminate unwanted tones in the past. As we know from the color wheel, red cancels out green. So be sure to shower shortly after getting out of the pool, if your hair got wet, and use a rehydrating shampoo 🧼. It gently cleanses while helping to repair weak, brittle, or damaged hair, leaving it looking lustrous, shiny, and healthy 🌟. Combine it with a rehydrating conditioner and watch it instantly detangle, condition, and repair dry hair 💦.

5️ Summer Hair Problem: Frizzy Hair
The antidote to frizz? Moisture 🌊. So look for a smoothing serum that’ll lock it in. Umberto Beverly Hills Roman Oil Serum seems to be the consensus favorite amongst the experts. Humidity is a bane of hair prone to frizziness 💨. Help tame the fuzz with Smoothing Oil-Infused Shampoo and Conditioner, which contains fairly-traded argan oil and babassu oil 🌰. They smooth and nourish frizzy hair while enveloping you in an intoxicating warm, woodsy scent 🌲—perfect for the warmer months. You’ll be left with softer, more manageable, shinier strands with a healthy appearance 🌟.

6️ Summer Hair Problem: Hair That Just Won’t Do Anything
Short on time? Just don’t feel like putting up with the struggle of a hairstyle? A couple of twists will whip even the unruliest hair into submission without a lot of fuss—ideal for those so-hot days 🥵 when you just don’t feel like primping for more than two minutes ⏱️.

7️ Summer Hair Problem: Hair That “Grows” on Hot Days
A voluminous ponytail is great for girls who have a little too much body on humid days—as your hair puffs up throughout the day, it’ll just add to the cuteness of the do 🎀! Conversely, other people experience the opposite: their hair seems to take on a life of its own and expand in humidity 🌬️.

8️ Summer Hair Problem: Limp Locks
If the weather has zapped all the life out of your hair, angle your comb when parting your hair 📐. A diagonal part gives a little more height at the crown for an extra hit of volume 🙆🏽‍♀️. For some people, summer heat and humidity can seemingly draw the life out of their hair. Consider using a Rice and Wheat Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner, which are formulated with hydrolyzed wheat and rice proteins and honey 🍯. They boost volume for fuller, shinier, healthier-looking hair. Plus, they help smooth split ends and flyaways while also helping to detangle hair. On the style side, you can also try a diagonal part, which can give your hair a little more height at the crown of your head 🧠. This creates the appearance of thicker, more voluminous hair 💁🏽‍♀️.

9️ Summer Hair Problem: Bang-Induced Breakout
Bangs can be a quick trick to make almost any hairstyle pop 💥, but the summer bangs come with some concerns, especially the breakouts on your forehead! Bangs trap heat between your hair and the skin of your forehead, they increase sweat production and create a climate that is ripe for acne pimples 😓. To avoid this, increase the frequency of your skincare routine 🧴 and make sure your forehead stays dry 🧻.
